The members of the Riksdag have submitted a total of 2,940 independent private members' motions during the general private members' motions period. This is the result of the preliminary count carried out after the general private members' motions period expired at 4.30 p.m. Friday 30 November. The result is yet to be confirmed.

Private members' motions are a way for members and parties to pursue their policies. During the general private members' motions period, members of the Riksdag can submit motions – proposals – that are independent of Government bills, on virtually any subject that the Riksdag can decide on. Motions may also be submitted in conjunction with a proposal from the Government or Government bill.

The general private members' motions period begins at the opening of the Riksdag session in the autumn and finishes 15 days after the Government has submitted the Budget Bill to the Riksdag. This year, the private members' motions period began on 24 September and finished 30 November, at 4.30 p.m. During the period, the members of the Riksdag submitted a total of 2,940 independent private members' motions (preliminary figure). They submitted fewer motions compared with 2017, when 3,847 motions were submitted. The number of private members' motions is usually lowest after a general election.

The motions are published on the Riksdag website and are available via the link below. It is possible to search for motions according to subject and sort them according to which party and member has submitted the motion.

Once a private member's motion has been sent in, it is submitted to the committee with responsibility for the area with which it deals. The committee goes through the motion and proposes what decision the Riksdag is to take on the motion. For many of the motions, the committees do not start this process until the spring. After that, a decision will be taken by the Riksdag on the motion. The date for a decision for each motion is published on as soon as the date has been decided.
