Grades will be introduced on a trial basis from year four. The Government has been given the go-ahead to establish such trials and to draw up suitable rules. At most, 100 schools will be able to take part in the pilot scheme.
The Riksdag approved the Government's proposal, which means that the Education Act will be amended.
A precondition for being able to establish the pilot scheme is that the school's head teacher and teachers are interested in participating. Before the scheme can be established, the pupils at the school and their parents are to have received information about it, and to have had the opportunity to express their opinions.
The legislative amendments will come into force on 1 April 2017. This means that some schools will be able to start the pilot scheme this autumn.
Grades are currently awarded from year six of compulsory school in Sweden.
