It is going to be easier for landowners to reclaim their land when people have settled there without permission. As a result of the Riksdag's decision, a new form of assistance - removal - will be introduced.

It will be possible to enforce removal in the case of unlawful settlement on land, in a building or in similar situations in which the owner wants the person or persons in question to move. The purpose of the new regulations is to make it easier, among other things, for landowners to reclaim their land, at the same time as those who are unlawfully residing somewhere will be ensured a legally secure process.

These amendments will come into force on 1 July 2017. The Riksdag essentially approved the Government's proposal, but with two amendments. The time limit for enforcing a removal shall be five days, instead of one week, from the day the person who settled was informed of the enforcement, that is, the implementation of the removal. The Swedish Enforcement Authority's processing time as regards enforcement shall be three weeks instead of four, from the date the documents were submitted.

The Riksdag also made four announcements to the Government, among other things, that the Government should take the necessary initiatives, at the latest by the turn of the year 2017/18, for a follow-up of the new regulations.
