Space issues and nuclear technology on the agenda during Speaker's visit to Kazakhstan

On 14-17 June, the Speaker Urban Ahlin made an official visit to Kazakhstan. During the visit, the Speaker and his delegation met the Speakers of both chambers of the Parliament of Kazakhstan as well as the Prime Minister.

The programme included meetings with Nurlan Nigmatulin, Speaker of the lower chamber (Mazhilis) and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Speaker of the upper chamber (Senate) of the Parliament, Prime Minister Bakhytzhan Sagintayev and Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov.

In addition, the Speaker and delegation visited the international exposition Astana Expo-2017 and the National Space Centre in Astana.

The delegation also travelled to eastern Kazakhstan to visit the Ulbin Metallurgical Plant and the Nuclear Fuel Bank in Ust-Kamenogorsk. Uranium production for civilian use is an important industry there. The delegation also visited a former test site for nuclear weapons in Semipalatinsk.

Outside the capital Astana, the Speaker and delegation paid a visit to Alzhir, a former Soviet prison camp for women. Today there is a memorial centre and museum there.

The delegation included members of the Riksdag Thomas Strand (Social Democratic Party), Hanna Westerén (Social Democratic Party), Saila Qvicklund (Moderate Party), Johan Hedin (Centre Party) and Secretary-General of the Riksdag Kathrin Flossing. Representatives of the Swedish National Space Board also participated in the visit.
