The Speaker Urban Ahlin participated in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliaments hosted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 15–16 September.

The conference takes place every other year. This year, the Speakers from the parliaments of all the 47 member states of the Council of Europe participated, as well as many other actors. The 350 delegates discussed matters including migration and the refugee crisis in Europe, how the national parliaments and the Council of Europe together can promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law as well as how the parliaments can work for a society that is inclusive and non-racist.

Urban Ahlin made a contribution to the debate on the subject of promotion of democracy. Ahlin spoke about the importance of democracy and social development as well as the fact that the Council of Europe must take action in order to counteract negative developments regarding democracy and certain human rights occurring in some of the member states.

"Based on the European Convention on Human Rights, The Council of Europe and its Parliamentary Assembly should work hard to safeguard and develop democracy in our countries", says Urban Ahlin.
