The Speaker of the Riksdag Urban Ahlin paid an official visit to Poland on 28-29 November. His programme included a meeting with the Marshal of the Sejm (the Polish Parliament), Marek Kuchciński, and participation in the Polish-Swedish Parliamentary Forum.
The two Speakers inspected the EU's external border in the region - the border between Poland and Ukraine. The Speaker received information about the border guards' day-to-day work and the challenges they face, and also paid a visit to a border station. In addition, the Speaker took part in the 15th anniversary of the East European State Higher School in Przemyśl which works to promote increased understanding of the EU's ideas on cooperation and solidarity.
Polish-Swedish Parliamentary Forum
On 29 November, the Speaker Urban Ahlin and several members of the Riksdag participated in a Polish-Swedish Parliamentary Forum at the Sejm. The Forum was held for the fourth time and had three overall themes: the future of the EU in the light of Brexit, security in the Baltic region and issues concerning the Eastern Partnership, and Polish-Swedish cooperation in the area of innovation.
The discussions also focused on migration, refugee and integration issues, climate challenges, Ukraine and Syria. Gender equality issues were a further topic of discussion. Parliamentarians from both countries exchanged experiences and discussion opportunities for cooperation within various areas.
The following members of the Riksdag participated in the conference: Pyry Niemi (Social Democratic Party), Göran Pettersson (Moderate Party), Kent Härstedt (Social Democratic Party), Roger Richtoff (Sweden Democrats), Hanna Westerén (Social Democratic Party), Dag Klackenberg (Moderate Party), Per-Arne Håkansson (Social Democratic Party), Marta Obminska (Moderate Party), Lars Tysklind (Liberal Party), Annika Lillemets (Green Party) and Karin Rågsjö (Left Party).
During the day, the Speaker Urban Ahlin also had a meeting with the Marshal of the Senate, Stanislaw Karczewski, about Belarus, Ukraine and bilateral relations between the countries.
