How the Riksdag works

All public power in Sweden proceeds from the people and the Riksdag is the foremost representative of the people. These words are written in the Swedish Constitution.

Sweden is a democracy. Democracy means government by the people. This means that the people choose who they want to govern the country. Every four years, the people of Sweden choose 349 individuals to represent them in the Riksdag, which is the supreme decision-making assembly in our country.

The Riksdag's tasks include enacting laws and determining taxes and the central government budget. It is also responsible for examining the Government and the public agencies in Sweden. Furthermore, the Riksdag has a considerable influence on foreign policy.

The Speaker presides over the work in the Riksdag. The Riksdag appoints the Prime Minister on the basis of a proposal from the Speaker. The Prime Minister then appoints the ministers who are to make up the Government.
