One of the Riksdag's most important tasks is to take decisions regarding expenditure and revenue in the central government budget. It does this after the Government has presented its annual Budget Bill, which is a document containing proposals for the use of money at the disposal of the central government sector.
Once the Riksdag has determined the central government budget, it is the Government's task to implement the Riksdag's decision. The Government is assisted by some 330 government agencies, such as the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the National Board of Fisheries.
The public sector comprises the central government, the municipalities and the county councils, and has overall responsibility for the provision of services such as health care, child care, education, defence and police services. The various actors in the public sector are responsible for different public services. The central government budget indicates how much is spent on each of these areas and where the money comes from.
