Your Excellencies

Ladies and Gentlemen

Welcome Mr President to the Swedish Parliament. You are the first Turkish President that has visited Sweden in a state visit. Your visit marks the good bilateral relations between our countries, relations that grow every year.

The Swedish-Turkish friendship relations can be traced back several centuries. Sweden established permanent diplomatic presence in Istanbul in the 1730's. The land off Istiklal Caddesi in central Istanbul that houses the Swedish Consulate General and the Swedish Research Institute, was acquired in 1757 and is the oldest property owned by the Swedish government abroad.

In 1737 the first trade agreement between Sweden and the Ottoman Empire was concluded. Today, there are about 250 companies with Swedish connections present in Turkey, among them IKEA, H&M and Ericsson.

Both parliaments have friendship groups for Swedish-Turkish and Turkish-Swedish relations.

Sweden has more than 100.000 Swedish citizens with Turkish origin, integrated in the Swedish society, but with a strong connection to Turkey. Sweden is one of the strongest supporters for Turkish EU-accession, we support Turkeys reforms to meet the criteria for EU-membership.

Shoc teschekkur ederim ! = Thank you!

– Now, I would like to give the floor to you, Mr. President.
